Safeway members have already shown what happens when we stand together and the company knows it.
We didn’t just ask for fairness, we fought for it and won.
On customer abuse, the company had five years to act and did NOTHING. It took union pressure and a formal order to force Sobeys to finally deliver protections for workers facing disrespect and abuse on the job.
Those wins were not given. They were forced.

“Thanks to our union and leadership, we got what we deserved,” said Safeway member Margaret Macaulay, who has worked at Safeway for nearly 39 years at the St. Albert location in Edmonton. “Tom and Richelle never gave up. They fought for us and showed what real leadership looks like. Workers are ready to stand together and take back what we deserve.”
Now the company wants to move forward without addressing wages for 2025, 2026, and 2027.
Let’s be clear: Sobeys can afford to pay more. They are choosing not to.
They are counting on members backing down.
They are counting on you not being ready.
We need to prove them wrong.

No one wants a strike, but if the company refuses to offer a fair deal, we must be ready to take action. That’s how we won before, and that’s how we will win again.
If we are going to fight, we need to be ready.
The first step is simple: hold off on major purchases. Thinking about buying a new car? Starting a renovation? Taking on new debt? Now is the time to pause and plan.

Delaying large expenses today can protect you and your family if job action becomes necessary.

This is just the beginning. In the coming weeks, you will receive regular updates on:
From past experience, banks and lenders often work with union members during a strike. We will also be providing resources and a letter to help you have those conversations.
Bargaining resumes April 14–16 in Calgary at the Hilton Garden Inn Downtown. We believe in open bargaining, and members are welcome, if you want to attend, contact your Union Representative and be part of the process.
Sobeys needs to see that Safeway members are informed, prepared, and ready to act.
Because when we stand together, we don’t just ask for better, we win it.
